YMC Hut Use

On Arrival

  1. Electric: The main supply is located in the tall cupboard under the stairs between the notice boards. There are two fuse boxes, both with blue switches, on the right hand side. They must be switched on. The emergency lights automatically activate when the power is off. Please do not tamper with them.
  2. Health & Safety: The YMC has a Fire Safety Policy, which sets out the YMC’s responsibilities and those of a group leader or responsible person. This policy is displayed on the notice board downstairs; read it and understand your responsibilities. In particular familiarize yourselves with the locations of the fire extinguishers, fire exits and assembly points.

During Your Stay

  • Water: This is always available. Once the electricity is turned on the hot water will begin to heat. It will take approximately one hour to get hot water.
  • Coal: Coal is stored in a bunker built into the graveled terrace in front of the cottages with its door facing the bottom track. The key is hung by the notice board in the dining area – please keep the bunker locked at all times. We recommend you provide your own kindling, as none is provided.
  • Supplies: We aim to provide cleaning materials, rubber gloves, bin bags and toilet rolls, but we cannot guarantee the supply, as there is no warden/cleaner on site. You are advised to bring your own. Please avoid bleach-based products as they affect the septic tank. Towels, tea towels, pillows, sheets and blankets are NOT provided; bring your own sleeping bags, etc.
  • Foraging: There is a post office, butcher, garage, two small general stores, pubs, and telephone box in the village, but there is no bank ATM: cash can be obtained in the post office, both general stores and garage.
  • Medical: There is one doctor in the village, but no pharmacy. The nearest hospital is in Kendal or Barrow-in-Furnace; ambulances come from Ambleside, Ulverston or Millom. The Coniston First Responders provide basic life support in cases of panic attacks, asthma, chest pains, etc, and can be contacted by phoning 999 or 112. They maintain equipment at the Coniston Fire Station, the Waterhead Hotel and the Ship Inn.
  • Occupancy: Maximum occupancy is 20 persons.
  • Pets: No pets are permitted inside.
  • Boots: No muddy boots/shoes upstairs.
  • Parking: Vehicles must NOT be parked outside, or adjacent to, the cottages. This is private land and there are permanent resident neighbours who need access at all times. Please park vehicles on the lower track, sufficiently clear of the foot bridge to allow cars, and particularly quarry wagons, clear passage.
  • Noise: Keep noise to a minimum between 11pm and 7am. Please consider our resident neighbours.

On Departure

  1. Electric: Turn off both of the blue switches at the fuse boxes.
  2. Rubbish: There is NO refuse collection from the cottages – You must remove all of your waste upon departure. Re-cycling of bottles, plastic cartons, cans, etc can be done at the Coniston Re-Cycling Depot off the Lake Road. General refuse can be taken to the Ambleside skip or home.
  3. Spare Food: Please do not leave any unused food behind, however charitable your intentions, as this may encourage vermin and cause a health hazard.
  4. Cleaning: It is important that your party thoroughly clean and tidies up after your stay. Details of what is expected are displayed in the kitchen area. In particular clean and tidy away all of the crockery and utensils. Wipe down the work surfaces and sweep the floors. Empty the fridges and leave the doors ajar. Leave the place as you would wish to find it.
