Eligibility to Join the YMC

Membership of the YMC is open to anyone over the age of 16 with an active interest in the outdoors.

Joining the YMC

To become a member of the YMC you must first apply for Prospective Membership and upon doing so will become eligible for some of the benefits of membership of the Club. During your period of Prospective Membership you will be able to apply for Full Membership and so take advantage of all the benefits of membership of the Club. Anyone over the age of 16 may become a member of the Club if they are keen on mountaineering and have the interests of the Club at heart.
Prospective Membership of the Club is simple to arrange and lasts for 6 months

Fees A fee, currently £8.00 is charged for Prospective Membership of the Club, however Prospective Members who are elected to Full Membership after 1st July are required to pay only 50% of the Membership fee.

Types of Membership

The following is a list of the different types of membership:

  • Single Membership: Any person aged 18 years or over.
  • Family Membership: Includes the partner and children of a Member. Children of Members are considered as Family Members up to the age of 16 after which they must apply for Membership in their own right.
  • Student Membership: A reduction in fees is made for Full Time students up to the age of 22.
  • Junior Membership: A reduction in fees is made for members who are aged between 16 and 18.
  • Honorary Membership: Is granted to members from time to time - see belowfor details.

Fees Annual Membership Fees are due on the 1 stof January. Prospective Members who are elected to Full Membership after 1 stJuly are required to pay only 50% of the Membership fee.

Closing DateFees must reach the Membership Secretary by the 31st of March, otherwise membership is deemed to have lapsed. HoweverThe final date for member's names to be entered on the list of names covered by BMC Third Party Liability Insuranceis January 31st. (The list may be updated from time to time during the year.)

Membership Cards are issued by the Membership Secretary on receipt of the appropriate fee. Cards are issued to Full Members of the Club only, ie. not to Prospective Members or to partners and children of Members with Family Membership who have not themselves applied for and been elected to the Club.

Renewal To renew your membership of the YMCplease print a membership renewal form and after completing it, return it together with the appropriate fee to the Membership Secretary.

Honorary Members

Honorary Membership of the Club is granted to persons who have made a significant contribution in some way to the Club. Candidates for Honorary Membership are recommended by the Committee at an AGM for consideration by the Membership.
No Membership fee is required from either the Honorary Member or the Members spouse (partner).

Benefits of Membership

Membership of the YMCbrings a number of benefits, ie. a full programme of events throughout the year, a bi-monthly newsletter, access to the Club's Lake District Hut at a reduced fee, access to the club's library, cover by BMCinsurance, discounts at sports shops, concessionary rates for Club guidebooks.
