Formation of the YMC

In 1941 a group of Yorkshire lads from Wakefield got together to go hillwalking and to practice rock climbing on local outcrops. The four lads, Stanley Craven, William Craven, Stuart Marsden and Colin White, chose to call themselves 'The Junior Mountaineering Club of Yorkshire'. The first AGM was held by candlelight in a barn in Malham.

The Club continued to grow and on 13 May 1952, an Extra-ordinary Meeting agreed upon the new title of 'The Yorkshire Mountaineering Club'. At that meeting A. Dolphin was elected the first President; E.A.Shepherd, Secretary; S.Fry, Vice President; and K.Firth, Treasurer. The Members elected to the Committee were P.Ramsden, W.Verity, J.Garnett, Miss P.Sheard and C.Soutar.

Records from C.White and E.A.Shepherd.
